Artist Biography
Equal parts psychedelia and backwater folk, inspired by Smithsonian field recordings, Arborea is a husband and wife duo from Maine. Buck Curran and Shanti Curran's music draws inspiration from progressive folk and rock traditions of groups like Pentangle, Tim Buckley and Led Zeppelin, as well as contemporaries Espers, Ray Lamontagne and Iron and Wine. Buck plays guitar, slide guitars, bowed strings, flutes, banjo, and vocals. Shanti provides lead vocals, banjo, ukulele, bowed strings, harmonium, and percussion.
Arborea is release Red Planet April 2011 on Portland OR label, Strange Attractors, the followup to their 2009 release, House of Sticks, on Borne! Records. David Fricke of RollingStone.com gives Red Planet (Strange Attractors Audio House) a pick as one of the Top Under The Radar albums of 2011.
Arborea curated the Leaves of Life compilation with Marissa Nadler, Alela Diane, Devendra Banhart, Larkin Grimm & more. All proceeds from the album sales benefited the UN World Food Program.
In 2010, Arborea curated a tribute to Robbie Basho, We Are All One, In the Sun (Important Records) with Helena Espvall, Glenn Jones, Fern Knight and more. The Basho compilation made the Best of 2010 list by Acoustic Guitar.
Arborea has been featured on NPR, WXPN, WFMU, WNYC's Spinning on Air and the BBC.
